The San Juan National Forest will be conducting heavy maintenance on the Lake Creek Bridge on the Pine River Trail six miles north of the Pine River Trailhead during the week of July 19, 2010. As a result, the Lake Creek Bridge will be closed to the public for three to four days, beginning Tuesday, July 20.
During this time, hikers and stock users seeking access to Emerald Lake, Flint Creek and other trails in the Weminuche Wilderness via the Pine River Trail will need to cross through Lake Creek downstream of the bridge. Although current water levels are low, care should be used to select a safe location to cross. The project is one of 17 trail-bridge repairs being conducted across the San Juan National Forest with funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). A private contractor has been hired to remove rotted wood from the bridge, install new decking and running planks, and paint trusses.
Because the project is within the Weminuche Wilderness, all work must be conducted with non-motorized equipment, so a private outfitter/guide service has been hired to carry supplies in on horseback. Trail users should be prepared to meet pack trains carrying large materials during this time. Hikers and backpackers should stand off the trail to the downhill side and speak in a normal tone of voice to riders to avoid spooking pack animals.
Bicycles and motor vehicles are not allowed within designated Wilderness.
